Manager Clint Hurdle joked this morning that he should have had Rockies trainer Keith Dugger conduct the daily pre-game media session. After all, there are more starters in Dugger’s training room than on the diamond.
As expected, all-star left fielder Matt Holliday was placed on the 15-day disabled list today with a strained left hamstring. His spot of the 15-man roster will be filled by outfielder Cory Sullivan, called up this morning from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Holliday strained his left hamstring running to first base on a groundout in the ninth inning Saturday in the Rockies’ 9-2 loss to the Mets.
“I felt it grab a little bit, we’ll see how it feels tomorrow,” Holliday said Saturday. “It’s tough to tell right now, I’ve got ice all over it.”
Holliday hasn’t had a hamstring problem before, so he isn’t sure how serious the injury is.
After this afternoon’s series finale against the Mets, the Rockies fly to Philadelphia to begin a 10-game road trip. Holliday will be left behind.
“We are going to leave Matt back for a few days because we have all the pertinent training rehab stuff here,” Hurdle said. “We’ll revisit when he might catch up with us.”
Third baseman Garrett Atkins is out of the lineup for a second straight day because of a stiff neck, but he’s not expected to have to go on the DL.
“We’ll just monitor him day to day and take it from there,” Hurdle said.
Center fielder Willy Taveras (bruised knee) won’t start today, but he is available for pinch-hit duties if needed.
The Rockies’ injury list this season has been extensive and a big part of the team’s poor start:
