FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Syracuse beat Johns Hopkins 13-10 in the NCAA final Monday, dethroning the defending national champions and becoming the first school to win its 10th men’s lacrosse title.

The Orange improved to 3-2 in title games against Johns Hopkins.

“When you get recruited at Syracuse, you’re going there to win a national championship,” said Mike Leveille, who was voted the tournament’s most outstanding player. “It’s certainly been an up-and- down road for the seniors. But we hung in there. This is the best ending possible.”

It was Syracuse’s fourth championship this decade but first since 2004. Last year, when three players were suspended for off-field behavior, the Orange finished 3-8 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1982.

Midfielder Dan Hardy scored three goals and John Galloway stopped seven shots for the Orange.

Indy 500 purse a record $14.4 million

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indy Racing League delivered on its promise of a record payoff for the Indianapolis 500.

Scott Dixon, who won the race Sunday, took home a record prize of $2,988,065 at the annual victory dinner Monday night. It was nearly double the former record of $1.76 million to Buddy Rice in 2004, and the total purse of $14.4 million broke the previous record of $10.7 million handed out last year.

The increases for first place and total purse marked the largest one- year jumps in the race’s 92-year history. The total prize package also was a record for open-wheel racing and was second in all of auto racing to NASCAR’s Daytona 500 at about $18 million.

Ryan Hunter-Reay, who finished sixth, received $328,065, including a $25,000 award as rookie of the year.
