The Vail Valley today awaits the decision by the International Ski Federation selecting the site for the 2013 alpine championships.
Vail/Beaver Creek and Schladming, Austria, are believed to be favorites to win the bid. Vail/Beaver Creek previously hosted world championships in 1989 and 1999. The FIS is meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.
Vail Resorts would build a new women’s downhill course at Beaver Creek’s Birds of Prey venue if it gets the bid. Other resorts bidding for the 2013 worlds include St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Cortina d’Am-pezzo, Italy.
“When we entered the race a year ago, we knew that we were going to be somewhat of a dark horse candidate in a world-class field,” Vail Valley Foundation president Ceil Folz said. “While we have made up a good amount of ground, I think we’re still a bit of an underdog heading in to Cape Town, but I also think we may be in striking distance.”
