Extreme athletes aren’t necessarily the ones you might see lifting a 300-pound barrel or running through a slippery obstacle course on some obscure late-night TV program.

They might be the type that chomp on hay.

Close to 25 horses and trainers strutted — or rather, trotted — their stuff as they raced through 10 obstacles in the Extreme Horse Race hosted by Craig Cameron on Friday.

Horses were evaluated not only on their speed, but also their expertise in pulling logs, opening gates, jumping and loading into a trailer.

The winners were able to pull it off in just five to six minutes, said Brian Kitchen, executive director of the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo, which began in Denver 17 years ago and now has an expo in Eagle through this weekend. The extreme horse race is one of the events.

“If people understand more about their horses, then they get more enjoyment from them,” Kitchen said about the expo.

Colorado State University, the Colorado Horse Council and the Colorado Horse Development Authority are sponsors. Check for information.
