A former Denver Newspaper Agency employee was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 10 years’ probation for stealing more than $250,000 from the company from 2003 to 2007.

Cassandra Demery, 34, was fired from her job as assistant payroll manager with the DNA in July, and she pleaded guilty to theft in April.

At Demery’s sentencing Monday, Denver District Court Judge Catherine Lemon ordered her to repay $275,811 to the agency that manages business operations for The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News, said Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman with the district attorney’s office.

At the hearing, Demery was apologetic to her family and co-workers, Kimbrough said.

Demery was ordered directly to jail and taken from the courtroom in handcuffs, Kimbrough said.
