A former Denver Newspaper Agency employee was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 10 years probation for stealing more than $250,000 from the company.
Cassandra Demery, 34, was fired from her job as assistant payroll manager with the DNA in July, and she pleaded guilty to theft in April.
At Demery’s sentencing today, Denver District Court Judge Catherine Lemon ordered her to repay $275,811 to the DNA, said Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman with the Denver district attorney’s office.
At the hearing, Demery was apologetic to her family and co-workers, Kimbrough said.
Demery was ordered directly to jail and taken from the courtroom in handcuffs, Kimbrough said.
The DNA is responsible for the business operations of The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News. The newsrooms remain separate.
Demery stole the money from the business over a four-year period, from January 2003 to July 2007.
