DENVER—Authorities say two Denver churches have suffered extensive damage from early-morning fires, and a man suspected of starting the blazes has been detained.

Police say the man was carrying a gas can nearby the fires on Wednesday. Fire Department spokesman Lt. Phil Champagne says the man is considered a suspect.

Authorities haven’t released his name.

The fires were reported at Rocky Mountain Miracle Center at about 3:30 a.m. and at the Church In Denver a little more than two hours later. They are about two blocks apart.

No injuries were reported but Champagne says both churches suffered extensive damage. He says the department is investigating.
