DENVER—Colorado’s quest to become a renewable energy leader has received a boost from a decision by Siemens Energy to locate a wind turbine research and development center in Boulder.

The German conglomerate expects to employ about 50 people at the center which will focus on research into atmospheric science, aerodynamic blade design and wind turbine reliability.

The CEO of Siemens’ wind power business unit, Andreas Nauen, says the company chose Boulder partly because of the proximity of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the National Wind Technology Center.

Siemens’ announcement follows one by Vestas Wind Systems saying it will start manufacturing wind turbine towers in Colorado.

Vestas recently opened its first U.S. blade plant in Windsor.
