Recently graduated seniors are on deck after the Rockies host the Milwaukee Brewers today at Coors Field in the annual Top 50 Game.

First pitch in the National League matchup is 1:05 p.m.; high-schoolers, competing in prep uniforms for the final time, should begin within 15 minutes after the Rockies’ game.

Former Mullen right-handed pitcher Tyler Sample, drafted No. 80 on Thursday by the Kansas City Royals, probably won’t take the mound, but most of the state’s best college talent from the 2008 season will be on display in an all-star game set for a two-hour time limit.

Milk money.

Recently graduated Mountain View distance runner Brianne Breemer has got milk and then some.

As the National Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award winner, Breemer will be in an ad June 27 in USA Today and in Orlando, Fla., to meet past milk winners Avery Johnson and Michelle Kwan.

Breemer, headed to the University of Colorado, also has earned a $7,500 scholarship.

Meek inherited.

After 34 years at Class 3A Steamboat Springs — 36 overall in his career — and 544 victories, coach Kelly Meek has retired as boys basketball coach.

As successful as he was popular, a grateful Meek, who stands third in Colorado career victories, will tend to family matters, including helping son-in-law Mike Moskowitz, head coach at Western State.

Big 8 revisited.

Beginning next season, the Class 5A South Metro League in football will be known as the Big 8.

Arvada West, Bear Creek, Chatfield, Columbine, Lakewood, Pomona, Regis and Westminster just didn’t have a south-metro ring to it, league rep and Columbine athletic director Ed Woytek said.

All-state games.

The state’s annual gatherings for graduated seniors from all classifications will begin this week at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Softball will open the games Wednesday at 3 p.m., then be joined Saturday by wrestling, 8:30 a.m.; championship-round games in volleyball (11 a.m.), boys basketball (1:30 p.m.) and girls basketball (3:30 p.m.); and football, 5 p.m.
