GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—A man who pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence in the shooting of a state trooper has been sentenced to 18 months of probation under a deferred judgment and sentence.
Wayne Hangs, 46, was sentenced Friday. He could have his record cleared of the charge if he stays out of trouble.
Prosecutors accused Hangs, Nichole Brownell and Cori Graham of trying to help Steven Appl hide after Appl shot former Trooper Brian Koch in the arm during a traffic stop near Silt in 2006. Koch survived.
After the shooting, Appl hid himself outside Hangs’ home, prosecutors said. Police said Appl later hid in a pickup truck Graham was driving and shot himself when police stopped the truck at a checkpoint the next day.
Hangs testified against Brownell, who was convicted May 21 of two counts of being an accessory to first-degree murder. Prosecutors said Brownell knew Appl had shot an officer but did not tell police. Hangs said Brownell was dealing methamphetamine for Appl while she lived in Hangs’ home.
Hangs is expected to testify against Graham in December.
