A fetus found in a portable toilet outside a sand and gravel business in Weld County was delivered stillborn, authorities said.

Results of an autopsy “have revealed that the fetus was stillborn at time of delivery,” said Weld County Undersheriff Margie Martinez in a press release.

The male fetus was found Wednesday afternoon when an employee vacuumed the tank.

The fetus could have been there for up to two weeks, which was the last time the toilet was cleaned, Martinez said.

The gravel and sand yard is in a remote part of the county about 8 miles south of the Wyoming state line, and about 7 miles off both U.S. 85 and Interstate 25.

The autopsy found the gestation period of the fetus is about 24-28 weeks or 6 to 7 months, Martinez said.

The investigation is ongoing in an attempt to locate the mother, who could possibly face charges of concealment of a death.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 970-356-4015, ext. 2825.
