HALLE, Germany — Roger Federer just wanted to survive a couple of rounds at the Gerry Weber Open after his painful French Open loss to Rafael Nadal.
The top-ranked Swiss star did much more, beating Philipp Kohl- schreiber 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday’s final for his 10th grass title. That matches Pete Sampras’ Open-era record of 10 grass-court titles and takes Federer’s unbeaten streak on grass to 59 matches.
• Nadal claimed his first career grass-court title, defeating Novak Djokovic 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the Queen’s Club final in London to become the first Spaniard to win on grass in 36 years.
It was the French Open champion’s third win in the last three tournaments over the second-seeded Djokovic. Andres Gimeno had been the last Spaniard to win on grass, at Eastbourne in 1972.
• Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko recaptured the Warsaw Open title in Poland when he beat second-seeded Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-3. Davydenko won the clay-court tournament in 2006, and Robredo won it last year.
• Kateryna Bondarenko claimed her first WTA Tour singles title with a 7-6 (7), 2-6, 7-6 (4) victory over Yanina Wickmayer in the final of the DFS Classic in Birmingham, England.
Turks reach Euro quarterfinals
GENEVA — Striker Nihat Kahveci scored two goals in three minutes late in the match against the Czech Republic to finish off an incredible comeback, giving Turkey a 3-2 win over the Czechs for a spot in the European Championship quarter- finals.
In Basel, Switzerland, Hakan Yakin scored twice to give Switzerland a 2-0 victory over Portugal, helping the co-host end its championship with a first-ever win in the tournament.
• Brian Ching scored three goals, two in the final four minutes, after Clint Dempsey scored 54 seconds into the match to set the tone in an 8-0 rout of Barbados in Carson, Calif., in the Americans’ first qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup.
• Kenny Cooper scored in the 17th minute to lift FC Dallas to a 1-0 win over the visiting Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer.
Askren qualifies at 163 pounds
LAS VEGAS — Ben Askren transitioned from NCAA wrestling champion to Olympian when he won the U.S. freestyle trials at 163 pounds by beating national runner-up Tyrone Lewis in consecutive matches.
Dremiel Byers, long the nation’s No. 2 Greco-Roman heavyweight to former Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner, used a five-point throw to beat Timothy Taylor at 264 1/2 and make the team.
