Two Larimer County animal rescue groups are asking for volunteers this weekend with horse trailers, flatbed trailers and hay to help as they move animals from the Ahimsa Ranch Animal Rescue, which is closing its doors.
Floss Blackburn, founder of Denkai Animal Sanctuary, is working with Shiloh Acres Horse Rescue to take the Ahimsa animals either to new homes or to Denkai and Shiloh.
Blackburn said today that all the animals from Ahimsa are in good shape but need new homes right away. There are horses, mules, donkeys, goats, chickens, a turkey, a steer, a yak and three pot-bellied pigs.
Among them are a six-year-old mule; a registered quarterhorse mare and a yearling filly; a mini mule; a mustang and colt; and what appear to be nubian goats.
Among the friendliest animals are a two-year-old steer who is “food-motivated,” a female yak and three donkeys.
Blackburn said that there are also several panels and pieces of equipment that will be coming to both Denkai, of Grover, and Shiloh Acres, of Fort Collins, with the animals, so flatbed trailers and hands are needed to help load the equipment.
Blackburn said that hay is needed for the animals and hay contributions will be greatly appreciated.
The organizations will start moving the animals at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Blackburn said the best way to volunteer is to contact Denkai Animal Sanctuary at 970-217-1457 (leave a message if you get a recording) or info@denkaisanctuary.org.
“These animals are looking for permanent homes,” Blackburn said. “If you know of anybody interested in adopting, we will do our best to post them on the website in the next couple of days with as much information as we can get.”
