In the week after Father’s Day, former Mullen High School quarterback Clint Brewster has left his Dad’s football program.
The younger Brewster, who was a redshirt the past season, his first as a Minnesota Gopher, will transfer according to Tim Brewster, the team’s head coach.
Neither could be reached for comment, but Tim Brewster released a brief statement on the Big 10 school’s website: “Clint Brewster has decided to transfer. I respect and admire Clint’s decision to further his education and play football elsewhere.”
Clint Brewster, expected to compete for the backup position this season, apparently saw his playing opportunities dwindle after his father signed two All-Americans, one from junior college and another from Indiana, for the upcoming season. Plus, Minnesota returns all other quarterbacks from the 2007 season, including the starter who has three years of eligibility remaining.
Tim Brewster is in his first head-coaching job beyond the prep level that included stints with the Texas Longhorns, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos, and making a name as a recruiter.
Last summer, Clint Brewster committed to Illinois, his father’s alma mater, then changed his mind a week before national signing day and after Tim Brewster had landed the Minnesota job in January.
The Gophers were 1-11 in the Brewsters’ first year, the worst record in Gophers history.
Southern Mississippi and Washington State also had shown interest in Clint Brewster, 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, leading to his final high school season. Undecided on where he will transfer, he threw 49 touchdown passes in two years as Mullen’s starter and played in the 2005-06 Class 5A title games.
