STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.—A 40-year-old man has died in a smoky fire in his Steamboat Springs apartment.
Authorities say David Engle was found dead Sunday. The Routt County coroner says autopsy results are pending but Engle likely died from smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Fire Marshall Jay Muhme says there was no sign of a smoke detector in the apartment. City code requires detectors in new and remodeled homes but Muhme says it’s not yet clear whether Engle’s apartment fell under those rules.
Investigators haven’t said what caused the blaze.
