DENVER—Colorado’s largest utility says the price of natural gas used to fire up many of its power plants has gone up, causing residential electric bills to rise about 10 percent this summer.
In a filing this week with the Public Utilities Commissions, Xcel Energy on Tuesday said residential customer bills would increase to $73.89 a month, based on the use of 625 kilowatt-hours. That’s an increase of $6.63 from the current cost of $67.26.
Xcel said it is also passing along the cost of natural gas, which it estimates is up 38 percent compared with last year. Because of decrease in demand during the summer, customers won’t feel the pinch until the winter.
If approved by the PUC, the rates will become effective July 1.
