A steel worker was injured this morning when a crane collapsed at the Viceroy Hotel construction site in Snowmass Village, authorities say.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital in stable condition after the 8:20 a.m. collapse, said Steve Alldredge, spokesman for construction company Related WestPac.

Construction of the 250-room, four-star hotel was immediately halted, and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was called, Alldredge said. The construction site was evacuated, he said.

“Safety is always our first priority,” said Jim D’Agostino, senior vice president of Related WestPac.

The crane is owned by Denver-based Rocky Mountain Structures. An investigation into what led to the collapse is underway, Alldredge said.

It’s too early to estimate the amount of physical damage caused by the collapse, he said.
