DENVER—The Colorado Division of Wildlife hopes to reduce conflicts between people and bears by trying to educate the public as the animals emerge from hibernation.

The agency has several online articles and brochures aimed at people who live in bear habitat.

State wildlife officers killed a record 59 black bears last year. Most of the animals got in trouble after getting used to eating food left out by people or breaking into houses where the doors weren’t locked or the windows weren’t closed.

Information on the Division of Wildlife’s Web site includes how to bear-proof garbage cans and tips on discouraging bears from staying around homes.
