LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Revenue at Colorado’s 42 casinos was down 8.7 percent in May compared with last year, continuing a slide that began in January after a smoking ban took effect.
For the month, the state’s casinos in three old mining towns reported revenue of $63.9 million, which is down from $70 million in May 2007. Hardest hit was Central City’s six casinos that saw revenue go from $6.9 million last May to $5.9 million last month, a 13.6 percent drop.
Casinos paid $11.3 million in gambling tax proceeds in May.
Revenue is down 11.5 percent for the year.
Other suspect reasons for the slide in revenue include a slumping economy and higher gas prices.
