DENVER—The jobless rate in Colorado is rising.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May was 4.9 percent, up from 3.7 percent in May 2007. The rate is up half a percentage point from April.
Colorado Department of Labor and Employment head Donald Mares (MAR’-ess) says the increase from April mirrors what is happening nationally.
The nationwide unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in May, up from 5 percent in April.
The state labor department says the construction industry added about 3,200 workers in May, the smallest increase in May in nearly a decade.
The department says a sharp drop in residential housing permits in 2007 through last April corresponded with a 4,400 drop over the year in construction payrolls.
