DENVER—The director of volunteers for the Democratic National Convention host committee in Denver has resigned, saying she wasn’t “empowered” to do her job.
Sondra Williams stepped down June 7. She declined to elaborate on her reasons, saying she didn’t want to criticize the host committee.
The committee is coping with fundraising problems. It reported this week it was $11.6 million short of its $40.6 million goal.
Williams said her proposal for a volunteer-appreciation party at the Denver Zoo was turned down because of costs. Host committee spokesman Chris Lopez said other plans for an appreciation party are under consideration.
Lopez said Williams set up the volunteer program well, and her departure shouldn’t hurt it. Two people who worked with her will be able to fill the gap, he said.
Lopez said Williams left on good terms with the host committee and she completed her job of training volunteer leaders.
“She was on loan from the National Education Association and she decided to go back to her job,” Lopez said.
“Early on she helped organize to get people to volunteer. Now we’re in the next phase to train them,” he said.
