Coloradans could pocket a reward for turning in people involved in cockfighting and dogfighting.
Officials with the U.S. Humane Society announced Wednesday they will offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the conviction of anyone involved in illegal animal fighting.
Attorney General John Suthers, who appeared with Humane Society officials at a news conference at the Capitol, said the illegal practice still takes place in Colorado. Earlier this year, he said, four men were arrested in Jefferson County for transporting 27 cockfighting roosters.
“The reward money provided by this organization for information leading to the arrest of criminals who breed and fight animals will play a very important role in helping to end these truly appalling crimes,” Suthers said.
Dogfighting and cockfighting are Class 5 felonies in Colorado, punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000 .
“While the cruel nature of these crimes is reason enough to be upset,” Suthers said, “too often there are additional dealings that add even more gravity to the situation.
“We in law enforcement almost always see gambling, drug dealing and other types of violence in close association with animal fighting.”
People with information about illegal animal fighting should contact their local police or animal-control agency. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
