COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — Two Colorado Springs police officers are being treated for injuries suffered when they were hit by an indirect lightning strike.

Colorado Springs Fire Department Lt. Julie Stone says the officers were taking part in a training exercise in a parking lot at the Skyview Sports Complex when the lightning struck about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Stone says the lightning struck a nearby light pole, then coursed through the ground to where the officers were standing.

Both officers were rushed by ambulance to Memorial Hospital.

Officer Darrell Dye is listed in fair condition, while the other officer is listed in good condition.

Instructor Officer Paul Toth says there was no rain, wind or anything to indicate a storm was approaching.
