DALLAS — Want a cool iPhone but don’t want to be tied to AT&T wireless service for two years? OK. But it’ll cost you.

Customers instead will pay an additional $400 and go month-to-month but still get the new device, which runs on a speedier third-generation network.

The $599 total price will be too much for many customers, said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Jupiter Research in New York.

“There’s a small minority of people who for whatever reason want the latest and greatest phone and don’t want to be tied to the network for two years,” he said. “It’s going to cost you quite a bit for the privilege of not signing a contract.” Bloomberg News
