An early-morning blaze at a Thornton apartment complex that firefighters believe was ignited by fireworks burned the outside of an apartment building Wednesday.
“Witnesses say they heard popping shortly before the fire,” said Chad McCullum, spokesman for the Thornton Fire Department. “We think it related to fireworks in some way.”
The fire at 10318 Woburn Keep was reported at 3:29 a.m. after evergreen bushes surrounding a building with 16 apartments caught fire, McCullum said. Several cars in the parking lot were burned, he said.
Windows were broken and the siding melted, but apartment interiors were not burned, McCullum said.
The fire displaced 12 people from four apartments, according to the American Red Cross in Denver.
Twenty-six firefighters in four engines quickly extinguished the blaze, McCullum said.
