Some things you never want to see on the Fourth of July, or any other day for that matter:
• Nothing but Illinois plates from Sturgeon Bay to Gills Rock.
• The Statue of Liberty in Brussels.
• Brett Favre in blue and orange.
Let’s say Favre really wants to be released by the Packers so that he may resume his career elsewhere.
Two problems.
One, it goes against everything Favre has said. He has always maintained his Packer-for-life stance. If he wants to play so badly that he’s willing to have his adored-for-life membership card revoked, so be it.
Two, were Ted Thompson to release or trade Favre, he might as well change his name to Harry Frazee. Frazee was the Boston Red Sox owner who sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. OK, so Favre at or near the end of his career is not comparable to Ruth at 24. Still, you do not want ownership of that legacy, “the man who let Favre go.”
Imagine Favre as a Bear … or a Viking … It’s not happening in this lifetime, or next. But if the Packers wanted to be pragmatists without fear of a backlash-created tsunami welling off the bay, Miami is far enough removed and in the other conference.
