SALIDA, Colo.—Emergency responders will soon converge on Salida High School to prepare for the unthinkable.
A multiple agency live training exercise named “Operation Overload” will deal with a sample scenario of an active shooter who has caused casualties at the school and has taken hostages.
The four-day training will get under way Monday. Already, it is drawing attention from state and national law enforcement agencies.
The operation will include students, parents, teachers and other volunteers, plus law enforcement officers, fire and medical personnel, and hospital staff.
Chaffee County Sheriff Tim Walker says officers will be using soft weapons systems, which shoot small plastic BB-like projectiles, during the exercise.
