The Jimenez clan invaded the Big Apple on Saturday to see the Rockies’ Ubaldo Jimenez pitch against his fellow Dominican, the Mets’ Pedro Martinez. In attendance at Shea Stadium were Jimenez’s mother, father, sister, niece and brother-in-law, and more friends than he could name. “My sister and her husband came all the way from the Dominican to see me. They are leaving tomorrow,” Jimenez said. On a day when the Rockies were shut out, Jimenez hung tough, giving up three runs in six innings. He struck out eight.
Bullish bullpen.
When the Mets removed Martinez after four innings because of tightness in his shoulder and groin, their bullpen took over. Carlos Muniz (two innings), Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis and closer Billy Wagner (one inning each) followed up with five innings of no-hit ball. Muniz collected the first victory of his career. The Mets’ bullpen has not allowed a run over its last 18 1/3 innings.
Daytime blues.
The Rockies fell to 8-20 in day games this season, easily the lowest winning percentage (.286) of any team in the National League.
