The limits of self-control. People trying to lose weight or stick to an exercise program often think they’d reach their goals if they just exerted a little more willpower. But willpower isn’t something you can turn on or off, according to an article in IDEA Fitness Journal. Kelly McGonigal, who teaches psychology at Stanford University, analyzed 27 studies. She reports that willpower is a mind- body response, not merely a mind-set; it’s limited; it’s trainable; and using it depletes resources in the body, lowering blood glucose levels and causing fatigue. Given the limits of willpower, people should set reasonable goals and conserve willpower for times when they really need it, McGonigal says. Other tips: Forgive yourself when you have a setback; fuel yourself with good food and positive experiences so you’ll be strong when you need to be; understand how family and job stresses might interfere with your health or fitness goals; and conserve or bypass willpower by focusing on other strengths like planning and commitment.
