Getting your player ready...

During the Rockies’ last homestand before the all-star break, Scott Podsednik appeared a prime candidate to be released, recording just two at-bats. He has now started four of the last eight games in center field, recording seven hits. He ripped three doubles Saturday, equaling his season total. He also scored twice in the first two innings as the Rockies chased Pirates starter Yoslan Herrera.

Welcome back.

Ian Stewart worked hard to correct his offensive approach after striking out 28 times in 55 big-league at-bats this season. He’s relying less on his body and more on his hands. He kept his weight back nicely in the first inning, blasting an 83-mph changeup for an RBI single.

Quick start.

With five runs Saturday, the Rockies have outscored opponents 37-35 in the first inning at Coors Field. They have been outscored 51-23 on the road.

LOOKING AHEAD

Today: Pirates at Rockies, 1:05 p.m., KTVD-20

Absent a no-hitter, there’s no way Aaron Cook (11-6, 3.57 ERA) will top his All-Star Game performance. He was nothing short of Houdini, wiggling out of bases-loaded jams while calmer than a lagoon. Cook has won five games at Coors Field this season. Jason Bay has gone 3-for-4 with two RBIs against the right-hander. Zach Duke (4-6, 4.40), once one of the game’s top prospects after an 8-2 rookie season, is clawing his way back. He’s 17-29 since. Visiting parks have given him fits, with opponents hitting .327.
