Pure bread
In 1991, long before organic became the fashionable — and healthy — way to grow and make food, Rudi’s Bakery in Boulder was using organic ingredients. The company made “Organic” its middle name in 2001, and it’s now on a mission to spread the gospel of bread that’s whole grain and preservative-free. To prove how much it believes in its products, Rudi’s will give a fresh loaf of bread to consumers who trade in other loaves from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at King Soopers, 2750 S. Colorado Blvd. More at rudisorganic bakery.com.
Light as a feather
The Nike swoosh will be seen on clothes and footwear worn by athletes from more than 100 countries in the Olympic Games that open Aug. 8 in Beijing, but it’s likely to be the shoes that get most of the attention. Nike’s new track and field shoes use Flywire, lightweight filaments that work like cables on a suspension bridge to support the foot. The track spikes, for example, weigh 93 grams (just more than 3 ounces). The golden shoes Michael Johnson wore in the 1996 Olympics weighed 112 grams. Nike’s distance shoe, the Luna Racer, employs a new lightweight foam. The Zoom Victory + (above) and other styles with Flywire are available at Niketown and online, and will be more widely distributed soon, according to spokeswoman Cindy Hamilton. Lean and mean
Paul Goldberg, the man who is responsible for keeping the Colorado Avalanche hockey team trained, has turned his attention to lesser athletes in “The Lean Look: Burn Fat, Tone Muscles, and Transform Your Body in 12 Weeks Using the Secrets of Professional Athletes” (Broadyway Books, $18.95), co-written with Matt Fitzgerald. What we like: The book is aimed at men and women, offering illustrated exercises, meal plans and food solutions.
