The National Weather Service has reported a temperature of 91 degrees in Denver as of 2:55 p.m. today, moving us one day closer to smashing a heat wave record that dates to the 19th century. In 1874 and again in 1901, Denver braved 18 consecutive days in which temperatures reached or surpassed 90 degrees.

Fortunately for record watchers – and unfortunately for relief-seekers – the week’s forecast is flush with 90-plus degree temps. If the heat lasts through Thursday, the record will be broken.

Later this afternoon, the National Weather Service expects a high near 93, with periods of rain cutting through mostly cloudy skies. Winds will blow calmly from the northwest, and gusts could peak at 20 mph.

Tonight, the low will drop to 65 degrees. The Weather Service forecasts partly cloudy skies and isolated showers and thunderstorms. The chance of precipitation is 20 percent between noon and midnight.

The heat will continue on Tuesday, as the high climbs to 94 degrees and the chance of rain drops to 10 percent. Partly cloudy skies will persist throughout the day and into the night, when the overnight low hits 66 degrees.

Wednesday, the high will reach 93 degrees. Winds will stay calm, blowing from the northwest. The chance of rain will hold at 10 percent between noon and midnight, the Weather Service reports.

Brace yourself for the rest of the week. Thursday’s high will be 94 degrees, Friday’s and Saturday’s will be 96 degrees, and Sunday will top out at a mostly sunny high near 98 degrees. Overnight lows between Thursday and Sunday will be in the mid 60s.

A slight chance of rain is forecast each day and night this week, according to the Weather Service.
