Getting your player ready...

RACINE, Wis. — First things first, Mr. Senator. Tell us where you stand on Brett Favre.

Thursday during a town hall meeting, the first issue raised was about the ongoing Favre saga. John McCain is ready to talk about the Iraq war, gas prices and terrorism. But don’t look for the Republican presidential candidate to weigh in on the Green Bay soap opera.

“I think you could carry Wisconsin, if you can get up and talk to Mark Murphy and Ted Thompson and resolve this dispute in Green Bay,” was the suggestion from the first person McCain called on.

“There’s a lot of controversies that I have eagerly leapt into in my time,” McCain said, then laughed. “I’m not so dumb that I’m going to jump into that one.”

He tried to get Favre-loving cheeseheads in the crowd to keep the matter in perspective. “We all agree that Brett Favre has provided America and the state of Wisconsin with some of its greatest memories,” he said. “And I hope we keep that all in mind as we go forward.”
