Denver’s heat streak continued Sunday with no letup forecast until Tuesday at the earliest.
The temperature at Denver International Airport on Sunday afternoon maxed out at 98, which is two degrees below the record of 100 degrees set in 1878.
It was the 22nd consecutive day of 90-degree or higher temperatures in Denver. The previous 90-degree record streak before this year was 18 days set in both 1901 and 1878.
According to the National Weather Service, the streak will continue today before a slight cool-down expected Tuesday.
Today’s forecast calls for isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon but mostly sunny and hot, with a high of 96 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 10 percent. For Tuesday, the Weather Service calls for a high near 85 degrees.
Denver is on track for its driest year on record, surpassing the record set in 2002 during the worst of a statewide drought.
The Weather Service’s gauge at the airport has recorded 3.28 inches of precipitation through July 31, nearly 2 inches below 2002’s pace of 5.34 recorded during the same period.
