DENVER—When United Airlines lost Jerzy Kaminsky’s rifle in 2006 that he had checked in for a flight to the U.S. from Warsaw, Poland, the airline graciously offered to rent another one for him.

Problem was, Kaminsky was a member of the Polish National Rifle Team and he planned to use his perfectly balanced rifle at the World Compak Shooting Championship in Prior Lake, Minn.

Kaminsky and other members of the team filed a lawsuit July 23 in U.S. District Court claiming United was reckless in how it handled their luggage. The rifles and other luggage containing clothes were eventually returned, but not until more than a month after the competition. Some members of the team were disqualified. It was unclear why the team filed the suit in Denver.

United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski-Janikowski says other airlines besides United handled the team’s luggage.
