A Fort Carson soldier who claimed he paid a ransom after his babysitter kidnapped his 7-month-old child made up the whole story, officials say.

Officials concluded that the babysitter never existed and are investigating who caused life-threatening injuries to the child, said Lt. David Whitlock, spokesman for the Colorado Springs Police Department.

David Spicer told detectives on July 24 that his child was taken by his babysitter, who threatened to harm the baby if Spicer didn’t pay a ransom. Spicer said he paid the requested amount.

The baby was taken to Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries, including severe malnutrition and a viral infection, Whitlock said.

Police turned the case over to Fort Carson’s Criminal Investigations Division and the Colorado Department of Human Services, he said.

Spicer is being investigated for possible child abuse, Whitlock said.
