LATROBE, Pa. — The Steelers signed veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich on Sunday, choosing the former Jaguars starter over Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowler.
Pittsburgh needed a backup for Ben Roethlisberger after veteran Charlie Batch broke his right collarbone in Friday night’s 16-10 preseason victory over the Eagles. Batch, who is scheduled for surgery today, is expected to miss four to six weeks.
The Steelers also signed veteran punter Mitch Berger, a former Colorado star, to compete with Paul Ernster and activated Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton from the physically unable to perform list.

• Saints rookie Adrian Arrington missed his second straight practice with a sprained toe and coach Sean Payton said the injury may be serious enough to sideline the former Michigan receiver for more than a week.
• Running back Ahman Green will likely sit out the Texans’ preseason game against New Orleans this week because of a pulled groin, but coach Gary Kubiak said the injury isn’t serious.
• The Browns signed former Ohio State defensive back Brandon Mitchell, who joins the team after spending last season on the Texans’ practice squad.
• Eagles guard Shawn Andrews reported to training camp after missing the first 17 days for unexcused personal reasons.
