COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Karen Sucharski’s daughter, Genevieve, had dreamed of space travel since age 5.
That dream was cut short eight years ago when she died in a car crash while returning to Colorado Springs from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where she was studying medicine and astronomy.
On what would have been Genevieve Sucharski’s 27th birthday on Aug. 2, her parents watched the launch of a rocket carrying some of their daughter’s ashes toward space in what was supposed to be a way to fulfill their daughter’s dream. Complications kept the payload from reaching orbit.
The launch was the third attempt to send the ashes into space through Celestis Inc.
Karen Sucharski says doesn’t know if she can do it again but may try.
