DENVER—Road signs for the Ralph Carr Memorial Highway were unveiled Sunday at the state Capitol.

Carr was governor of Colorado when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. He warned others not to trample on the rights of American-born citizens simply because of their ethnicity.

He opposed interning Japanese-Americans in camps such as Camp Amache in southeastern Colorado, even though that position was unpopular.

This spring, state lawmakers approved a resolution naming U.S. 285 from Denver to the New Mexico state line in his honor for taking that stand, even though it hurt his political career.

Gov. Bill Ritter said Sunday that Carr understood more than other Western politicians at the time what it meant to be an American.
