DENVER—The Regional Transportation District will consider a proposal to increase its fares amid rising fuel costs and lower sales-tax collections.

The proposed rates would mean cash fares would cost an extra 25 cents for local rides and 50 cents for express and regional rides.

RTD’s board of directors will vote on whether to approve the recommended hikes and public meetings will be held before a final vote on the proposal happens in October.

RTD is paying about $3.20 per gallon for diesel but officials have said they could be paying up to $5 for every gallon of diesel next year. At the same time, RTD expects its sales tax collections to be down more than $18 million this year.

RTD is on pace to carry a record 100 million passengers this year.
