BEIJING — Lee Jong-wook hit a sacrifice fly with one out and South Korea answered the Americans’ ninth-inning rally with one of its own, beating the United States 8-7 on Wednesday night in a thrilling Olympic baseball opener.

Lee Taek-keun’s slide home easily beat the throw for the winning run.

The Americans had seemed poised for the comeback victory after Matt Brown hit a go-ahead two-run single with two outs in the top of the ninth, but South Korea rallied against closer Jeff Stevens.

Leslie leads U.S. to rout of Mali

BEIJING — Lisa Leslie set a U.S. Olympic record going 7-for-7 from the field as the women’s basketball team continued its unblemished run through the Beijing Games with a 97-41 victory against Mali.

Federer reaches quarterfinals

BEIJING — Roger Federer avenged a defeat four years ago at the Olympics by beating Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6 (4) to reach the quarterfinals.

It was Federer’s biggest victory since he lost to Rafael Nadal in an epic Wimbledon final last month. Nadal also advanced, beating Igor Andreev of Russia 6-4, 6-2.

No. 3 Novak Djokovic beat No. 13 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 (3), 6-3.

• With defense-minded Todd Rogers leading the attack with Phil Dalhausser, the Americans advanced to the beach volleyball medal round with a win over Argentina.

• The U.S. women’s volleyball team defeated Venezuela, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 25-18.

• Manuchar Kvirkvelia of Georgia defeated China’s Chang Yongxiang for the gold medal in the Greco-Roman 74-kilogram weight class.

• China’s Wang Feng and Qin Kai won the men’s 3-meter synchronized springboard event.
