CASTLE ROCK, Colo.—A 17-year-old boy in shackles fled during his court appearance and led authorities in a chase that forced three schools to lock down.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office says the teenager was appearing on a theft charge when he ran out of the courtroom’s back door and across a nearby highway.

The sheriff’s office says the teenager was apprehended after a Castle Rock Wal-Mart customer spotted him near the store and alerted authorities, who chased him. His green detention uniform and shackles were found in a storm drain nearby.

Authorities are investigating how he made his escape.

Castle Rock Elementary, Douglas County High and Renaissance Magnet were all locked down while police and deputies looked for the teenager.
