DENVER—Colorado political leaders are calling on presidential candidates to make education a top issue in this year’s campaigns.

Former Gov. Roy Romer, who chairs the bipartisan Strong American Schools campaign, says the United States is facing serious problems with security, the economy, global warming and other issues, but none of those issues can be addressed without educated workers.

Romer says the nation needs its leaders to find ways to increase expectations for educators and students, improve teaching and provide more pay, and increase the amount of time children spend in the classroom.

Gov. Bill Ritter, former Gov. Dick Lamm, former Sen. Hank Brown, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and other political leaders back the campaign.
