DENVER—Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, a defense expert who’s been mentioned as a possible running mate for Barack Obama, will speak at the Democratic National Convention next week.

Organizers said Tuesday that Reed will speak Wednesday night, when the theme is “Securing America’s Future.” Also speaking that night are former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the presidential Democratic candidate in 2004.

Nancy Keenan, president of the abortion-rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America, and Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood of America, will also speak at the convention.

Other speakers announced Tuesday include former President Carter, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver and Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle.

Details of the program for the convention’s final night on Aug. 28 haven’t been announced.

Obama will give his acceptance that night at Invesco Field at Mile High, the 75,000-seat stadium where the Denver Broncos play.

The theme is “Change You Can Believe In,” and Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter has been announced as one of the night’s speakers.
