VAIL — A Castle Rock man skipped out on his bill at the tony Lodge & Spa at Cordillera and then led law officers on a chase at speeds up to 140 mph through Eagle and Summit counties Saturday afternoon, running vehicles in his path off Interstate 70, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.

Paul Fenton, 38, called 911 and Denver TV station KUSA-Channel 9 during the chase to say that if his pursuers didn’t back off, he would “blow his brains,” the sheriff’s department said.

Fenton already was wanted on five arrest warrants for parole violation, flight escape and larceny, investigators said. The chase slowed when the Vail Police Department put down spike mats on I-70 in Vail.

With two of his tires flat, Fenton raced on at 80 mph until his car broke down a few miles away.

Authorities say he jumped out of the moving car and ran from the eastbound lanes across to the westbound lanes, where police caught him at 2:37 p.m.
