GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A man who admitted to killing a pregnant woman whose baby later died will spend life in prison in a deal he struck with prosecutors so the case wouldn’t go to trial.
A Mesa County judge sentenced 39-year-old Lonnie Herrera to 102 years in prison for the March slaying of Anna Maria Macias. She was shot in front of a Grand Junction apartment complex, a crime witnessed by her 8-year-old daughter. Herrera’s plea deal kept the daughter from testifying at trial.
Herrera declined to speak at his sentencing, saying “it’s too hard to talk” and that he hopes Macias’ family reads the letter he wrote to them.
Herrera was Macias’ boyfriend. He was on parole at the time of the shooting and Macias had placed a restraining order against him.
