For months now, the Obama campaign, Denver planners and activists have been preparing for next week’s Democratic National Convention, to be held in the Mile High City.

But there’s one thing that can’t be planned or controlled: the weather.

The National Weather Service issued a forecast today that extends from this morning through Thursday, the convention’s final day.

According to meteorologists, today will be gorgeous in Denver – sunny, with a high near 84 and light winds flowing from the northeast.

Around noon, a cold front will creep across northeast Colorado, bringing cooler temperatures and possible thunderstorms overnight.

Small hail and gusty winds are expected this evening, particularly over the plains southeast of Denver.

Will the dramatic weather extend throughout the convention?

It’s possible. After tonight, the 10 percent chance of rain will raise to 20 percent, where it will hover for the convention’s duration.

Weekend temps will be similar to today, 84 on Saturday and 85 degrees on Sunday.

Between Monday and Thursday, convention-goers and residents alike can expect highs in the upper 80s.

Cloud cover should provide some protection from the Mile High City’s stronger sun rays, but visitors are still advised to drink water and apply sunscreen liberally.

Overnight lows between now and Thursday will fluctuate in the mid-50s and low 60s, the weather service reports.
