Bungei of Kenya kept alive his country’s stellar record of distance running excellence by capturing gold in the 800-meter run Saturday.
Bungei, 5-foot-8, 132 pounds, has been prominent on the international running circuit for years. He placed fifth at the 2004 Games. He lives in Kabirirsang in Kenya but moves to Verona, Italy during the heart of the track season.
“I won for my country, Kenya, and I won for Italy. If I was to share this medal it would be with Italy.”
Bungei, 28, was first spotted by manager Gianni Demadonna after finishing second at the 1998 World Junior Championship in Annecy, France, launching his track career.
