RICHMOND, Va. — Barack Obama has something to say to Denver drivers likely to be irritated Thursday by downtown street closures and a four-hour shutdown of Interstate 25 near Invesco Field at Mile High. “I feel terrible,” he said. “Let me apologize in advance for any inconvenience I’m causing for drivers. I wish it could be avoided.”

Obama, who has Secret Service protection, is escorted to events in a motorcade that often ties up traffic. He said he understands that the Secret Service needs to do its job but sometimes wishes it could redirect drivers’ anger.

“I always joke to them that whenever they start setting up motorcades and blocking on-ramps . . . to put up a sign saying ‘McCain Straight Talk Express,’ ” he said.
