When budgets get tight, it’s all about the bulk section of the grocery store. Here you’ll find bins of oats, the best breakfast on the planet (and one of the most healthful), which will cost you half as much or less than the stuff in the box, and offer even steeper savings over the pre-flavored instant envelopes.
And when you put in the few minutes it takes to cook real oatmeal on the stove, it tastes far, far better.
Old-fashioned Stove-top Oatmeal
Makes 2 servings.
Ingredients
1 cup dried rolled oats
1 3/4 cup boiling water
Pinch salt
Butter, maple syrup, half-and-half, raisins, brown sugar or other toppings, as desired
Directions
Place medium saucepan over high heat. Put oatmeal directly into dry saucepan and stir for 2 minutes, until lightly toasted. Stir in water, reduce heat to medium, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Add salt halfway through the cooking. Remove from heat, add toppings as desired, and serve hot.
